How to write a thesis is important, but it is equally important to know who to write it with.
We will never tire of repeating it: the choice of the speaker is fundamental.
Not all professors have the time available to follow your thesis, and it would be a real shame to miss the session or have to change the subject for a necessary change of speaker.
Let us now assume that you have mastered the bureaucracy. Degree application made and approved. Topic already in mind. Type of thesis, too.
Now you have to find your perfect speaker. By the way, here are some tips.
Since you already have the macro topic of your thesis in mind, think of the speaker who seemed to you more up to date on the subject. Try to propose and cross your fingers. Remember that the more proactive you are (eg. Already carrying out an analysis of the existing literature on the topic or a lineup of how you want to deal with the topic), the greater your chance of conviction and your freedom of movement. Perhaps this way you will not risk to undergo a topic chosen by him for his interests and you will instead be able to deepen yours. Don’t forget that it must be a subject in which taking the exam has been a real pleasure and has led to good results (at least a 27 is welcome).
Choose a professor in good health and present: he must be able to support stress and perhaps console you a little in moments of panic.
Finding the right speaker is not easy: make sure that your choice can be well thought out. Pay attention to its actual availability: you will have to compare yourself with him / her many times, consider that your topic likes him / her and responds to his / her current interests. If the potential speaker sees his own personal utility in following your work … you are on horseback!
So, immediately check at least these 3 elements:
Introduce yourself and tell your rapporteur well (do not fool yourself that you think of him as the first love!): Tell him about your studies and let him understand that you are starting to work on the thesis, perhaps asking him for a reference bibliography on the chosen topic and preparing a draft index.
The choice of the speaker is not easy but you cannot wait that long: be quick in your choice! So it starts earlier. Start thinking about it a few months earlier, perhaps considering an exam in which you went particularly well, or a professor who really made an impression on you.
We hope these tips have been helpful. Also compare with your colleagues, every university is a place of its own, you could discover interesting news!
Therefore, our greatest good luck!
